Hans began his career as a junior-photographer for the University of Utrecht in The Netherlands. After a thorough training in the use of lenses and the art of lighting (and way too many hours in the darkroom), Hans started working for the Dutch public radio. As a sound engineer, Hans came in contact with all genres of music; from the riches of the Concertgebouw Orchestra to the evocative melodies of The Police.
With the rise of the Dutch pubcaster Veronica (VOO), Hans landed his dream job as television director in 1986. Most Veronica productions were based on music and Hans directed series like StarSearch, Nederland Muziekland and many concerts including performances by international stars like Lionel Richie, Gloria Estefan and The Gipsy Kings.
Working with Endemol’s cofounder John de Mol, Hans made many television formats into international successes. He is probably best known for directing ‘All You Need is Love’ in multiple countries. However his classical performance competition show ‘Una Voce Particolare’ (a special voice), generated a large following as well. Both shows are still on the air today, more than a decade after their conception.
With more than 400 hours of prime time television under his belt, Hans moved to Los Angeles in 1999. It was not long before Hans set the tone on the first season of ‘The Amazing Race.’ With Adrian Grenier, he tried to make the world a better place in ‘Alter Eco’ and, being used to large scale live productions, he tackled ‘Cha$e’ for SyFy.
While directing and producing are Hans’s first passion, he also prides himself to be a sought after, Emmy nominated editor with a laundry list of US hit shows to his credit.
